Once your website is complete and live and viewable to the world, how are people going to find your site? You'll send an email to all your friends and family to have them see the new site. Your URL will be on your letterhead and business cards and brochures and any ads you run. But how will someone who has never heard of your company find your site? You need to submit your site to search engines to guarantee you'll be found.
Submit Your Site Yourself
You can save money by submitting your site to the major search engines yourself. Yahoo, AltaVista and Google all have ways to suggest a site to their directories. There are also programs online and available for downloading that you can use to help submit your site. Most of these do-it-yourself methods may take anywhere from days to months before your site is listed. There are many sites available today that will give you much information about search engine submissions; simply do a search on your favorite search engine (yes, use a search engine to do a search on search engines).Hiring a Third Party
There are many companies out there that will gladly take your money and guarantee that they will get your site placed in the Top 10 of any given website. Use these companies at your own risk; think about it... if you sell Widgets, and there are thousands of other Widget sites out there, how likely is it your site will be very high in the rankings? The more general your subject matter ("car" vs. "Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Twin Turbo") the more likely you'll have a lot of competition for those coveted Top 10 rankings.
